Game-A-Week: Duke Nukem – Manhattan Project

Title: Duke Nukem – Manhattan Project

The Gist: It’s Duke Nukem, old school game character who kicks ass and chews bubblegum, nuff said. This game is a homage to the original Duke Nukem games prior to the famous Duke Nukem 3D but utilises a modern graphics engine that lets you play in a 3D environment but restricts you to playing in 2D side-scroller fashion, this just means that you’ll get better closeups at times and you’re able to turn corners somewhat. You’ll find yourself searching for key cards in order to finish levels, kill various enemies and as always rescue big-boobed women from capture.

Pros: It’s got the guns, the lines, the girls, the enemies and even treats you to bosses at the end of levels. It might not be the best game in the world, but it’s enjoyable if you’re a fan of Duke Nukem in any way or you generally like shooting up aliens. Hail to the King baby!

Cons: Only cons are that this game isn’t the Duke Nukem game everybody wanted at the time it came out, they were all waiting for Duke Nukem Forever… There isn’t really anything else wrong with the game other than the confusion it sometimes causes from level design. Once of twice when playing I literally reached a dead-end, to which I figured I’d need to fall off the side of the building I was on only to end up falling to my death >.<

Musical Note: I was a little annoyed that for the first few levels of the game you’re listening to the same track over and over, I really wanted a bit more music to mix things up as the levels feel very samey already. Eventually you will get a bit more music, with 8 chapters I guess they just wanted to stretch it out.

Hunger Level: Going to be finishing this one-off soon, after playing Duke Nukem Forever recently I have the taste for cheesy lines with a side order of Pig-Cop. Mmm Bacon!

Conclusion: GoG (Good Old Games) currently have this game on their site and it’s not exactly expensive, it’s also on Xbox Live if you’d prefer. I was cheap enough to wait for it to be on sale but that’s your choice. If you’ve enjoyed any Duke game this is something you should try out, it very much plays like the side scroller games of old such as the original Bionic Commando on the NES or Robocop Vs Terminator on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (anyone play that game? Twas awesome!). Pick it up and save the world today, many a babe is looking to reward you for your efforts. Shake it baby!
